Later Made Hampi as the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, there we go the Beautiful and one of the richest cities flourished.
Hamp and its group of monuments is also the UNESCO World Heritage Site which is located in East-central Karnataka, India. Which encompasses an area of 4,187.24 hectares comprising more than 1600 surviving remains which includes forts, temples, shrines, mandapas (Halls), beautiful stone pillars etc.
It is to be noted that Hampi was the Worlds Second largest Medieval city after Beijing which was also the richest during that period, later became a wealthy and prosperous pilgrimage centre.
Hampi also drew traders from Persia and Portugal
Virupaksha Temple and The Stone Chariot - The Epic centre of Hampi
The Virupaksha Temple was built under the reign of King Deva Raya 2 dedicated to Lord Shiva there are several inscriptions in and around the temple about Lord Shiva. Earlier the shrine was very small in size later stage it was built into a huge complex during the period of Vijayanagara, Hoysala and Chalukya reigns.
Hampi Chariot was inspired by the Chariot in Konark Sun Temple, it is said that this magnificent chariot was built by Emperor Krishna Deva Raya, he was fascinated seeing the Chariot in Konark Sun temple, Orissa and wanted to build the similar one in his Kingdom.
From busiest city To Deserted Ruins
Hampi was brought down to ruins by Invaders, The Vijayanagar Empire and its Capital Hampi were dominant at that time which made the Sultanate dethrone the empire, under the Islamic coalition the empire was brought down to ruins in 1565.

- In order to save this beautiful medieval architectural marvel from the treasure hunters, the Archaeological Survey Of India (ASI) took steps to protect the Stone Chariot and Temple Complex.
- Hampi Chariot is one among the other famous Stone chariots in Konark, Orissa and Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.
- Tourists cannot get closer to the STone chariot due to the protective measure ring by the ASI.
- Recently the Vice President Of India visited this Iconic site.
