Nada Prabhu Kempe Gowda:

  • Kempe Gowda, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire who acted as an independent ruler.
  • Kempe Gowda visualised a city with Military Cantonment, Temples, Water Tanks, Fort markets and residential areas that provide employment to Tradesmen.
  • He approached the Vijayanagara King for approval and laid the foundation for Bengaluru City in 1532.
  • The planned city had Eight access gates, wide roads and the settlement Spread across present-day Avenue Road, Ulsoor, Yelhanka, KR Market and Malleswaram.
  • Watchtowers were erected by him, he is also credited for building Basavangudi Bull Temple, Ulsoor Someshwara Temple and Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple all still standing Strong.
The Mud Fort

Now Called Bengaluru Fort in City Market, the mud fort was established by Kempe Gowda to be the foundation of Modern-day Bengaluru.
He built this Mud Fort in 1537 it stood strong till it was replaced by a Stone Fort in 1761 by Hyder Ali.

Legend Of Mud Fort:

  1. While constructing the Southern Gate of the fort, it used to fall off immediately every time they constructed.
  2. Someone suggested for a Human Sacrifice but Kempe Gowda was against it.
  3. However, it is said that his Daughter In Law Lakshmamma Sacrificed Her life but cutting off her head near the entrance, and then the construction of the fort was complete.
  4. In memory of her Sacred Sacrifice Kempe Gowda built a temple for her in Koramangala.
The Four Watch-Towers Of Kempe Gowda - Bengaluru




  1. Kempambudhi Lake - Hanumanthnagara, this location with the tower is almost invisible, perched on top of the Hillock.
  2. Mekhri Circle - located in a well-maintained park, this one is the only tower located on a level and not a Hillock.
  3. Ulsoor - Maintained by Military, use this place for training their personnel. and visitors are allowed with Permission from the Officials
  4. Lalbagh Botanical Garden - The tower is located on top of the Hillock, the rock on which the Tower is located is very old and believed to be 3000 Million years old according to GSI.

And this Historical city was built by an Indian Ruler…480 years ago
whereas;
  • Chennai Then Madras - was built by Andrew Cogan and Francis Day of East India Company to make it into a Colonial Centre.
  • Kolkata the Calcutta - founded by Jobb Charnock
  • Mumbai then Bombay - founded by Portuguese and later gifted it to British King Charles.
Even today despite the challenges of population, traffic and Environmental pollution, Bengaluru remains a Garden City.
It is because of Kempe Gowda and his capability of Well Planned Urban Development.
As a mark of Respect to Kempe Gowda government has named one of the main roads in Bengaluru as Kempe Gowda Road.
And Kempe Gowda International Airport is also named after.
