Karikala Cholan - Founder of Chola Dynasty - Greatest Chola King Who Built A Dam 2000 Years Ago

Karikala Cholan early Chola King ruled during the Sangam Era also known as Karikala Peruvalathan and Tirumavalavan.
There are lots of historical proofs and poems of Sangam Literature to prove the existence of Karikala Cholan. The main sources are Pattinappalai, Porunararrupatai and few numbers Individual Poems in the Akananur and Purananur.




Karikala Cholan and Kallanai - The Grand Anicut


Though Karikal built great temples, forts, his biggest legacy is Construction of Kallanai.
Kallanai - One of the Oldest Water-Diversion and Water-Regulatory structures in the World.
The Cauvery delta region was always fertile, but the river caused great floods during the Rainy season and the region experienced droughts during Hot and Dry Seasons. Karkalan wanted to change this, he and his advisers devised a Grand Project to maintain a steady flow of water throughout the year.

Kallanai served two major purposes: Flood Control and Irrigation.
How they Built it?
  1. The rate of flow of water back then was more ferocious, building an engineering structure Like Kallanai was unthinkable.
  2. Architects back then used a peculiar method to build Kallanai.
  3. When we stand in the seashore experiencing the waves, we can feel our feet getting under the sand and the waves go back.
  4. The longer we stand the sand under our leg will get eroded and our feet will move in.
  5. Based on this concept the Kallanai was built with huge granite blocks dropped in the river, as the stones moved under placed another block over the existing ones.
Karikalan is one of the greatest kings and his engineering marvel, which has served its purpose for over 2000 years was possible because of his long term vision, excellent planning and meticulous execution.
